Do You Belong To A Consultant's Group?
Instead of talking about myself first, I'd like to ask a question. How many of you belong to a consultant's group in your area? Or, for that matter, do you know if your area even has one?
I live in the Syracuse, NY area, and I belong to a group called the Professional Consultant's Association of Central New York. We're slightly affiliated with the local chamber of commerce in that, if people belong to our group, they get a very nice discount from the chamber membership.
We hold 9 meetings a year, the second Friday of each month, and break during the summer. We even have one social event a year; last weekend we got together as a group for a dinner buffet at one of the local large hotels. We have a newsletter and a website (I write the newsletter and I manage the website; two things I'm not bad at). We have a few articles on the site, but the thing we have that seems to garner the most attention from the search engines is our ethics statement; we believe consultants should honor certain ethical standards. We also have a manual that lists all the members, what they do, and their bonafides; that was partially my idea also.
The thing is that it's hard being a consultant overall. It's a lonely business when you work by yourself, and even though it can be rewarding, sometimes you feel like you're the only one going through what you go through. Half of our meetings talks about what consultant's go through, and things we deal with such as trying to market when we're already working with someone, branding ourselves, etc.
Okay, enough of that. How do y'all interact with other consultants? Don't say this particular network, since, truthfully, there hasn't been a lot of networking here from what I've seen. But maybe this gives us a platform to start that type of conversation. I won't list the link to our consultant's group unless asked; I don't want to look like I'm advertising anything.
